Five Tips for Renting a Bulldozer

Bulldozers come in various makes and models and provide a wide range of options for strength, flexibility, and utility. Many fleet owners choose to rent a bulldozer because of the advantages of rental equipment. If you plan on getting a bulldozer rental for the first time, this blog post will outline what to know before renting a bulldozer.

1. Consider Your Job and the Rental’s Specifications

Different bulldozers suit different jobs. Consider how much strength and maneuverability you’ll need, and find equipment that corresponds to those requirements. Depending on your project scope and specs, you may need more than one model to accomplish your goals.

2. Find the Right Bulldozer for Your Industry

Depending on the industry, your operation will likely require a dozer with a unique set of specifications. Are there weight restrictions on your equipment? Do you need to prevent sinking or surface damage on your job site? Keep those factors in mind while browsing dozer rentals.

The following sizes of bulldozers are best suited to specific industries:

  • Small dozers: Compact bulldozers are ideal for use in industries such as landscaping and residential work due to their great maneuverability. Since small bulldozers tend to weigh 20,000 pounds or less, they can work on softer residential and landscaping surfaces without sinking or causing permanent damage.
  • Medium dozers: Medium bulldozers are more powerful and can be more versatile than small dozers, which makes them ideal for operations such as construction and mining and allows you to complete your construction jobs more efficiently. Many medium dozers give you the power of a larger model without being overly cumbersome or risking the machine sinking. If your job site has weight limits or requirements on your equipment — such as in the residential or commercial sector — a medium dozer might be the perfect compromise for size and efficiency.
  • Large dozers: With a large bulldozer, you’ll have all the power of a machine that’s ready for your most challenging mining, quarry, landfill and construction jobs. To be classed as large, a dozer must have an operating weight between 60,000 and 150,000 pounds, which is great moving power no matter your job site’s conditions.

3. Choose the Right Rental Company

Your choice of rental company matters as much as your equipment decisions. The quality of your rental company depends on factors such as fees, available services and the level of customer service provided. Different companies have various requirements and policies surrounding the rental process.

4. Ask About Insurance Coverage

Consider how your insurance will cover any bulldozers that you rent. Look into the existing coverage you have through your insurance company to see how it applies to rentals. You can also ask the rental company if it offers any supplementary coverage.

5. Get the Rental Support You Need

Make sure that your rental company offers the support you need to get the most out of your bulldozer. If you need training on bulldozer operation, see if the company provides it. Ask if they offer additional services like consultations, equipment service and after-hours support.
